Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health problems in the 21st century. According to PMC, the US Library of National Health and Medicine and National Institutes of Health, over 42 million children under the age of five are obese worldwide in 2010, and that number continues to ascend at an alarming rate. Obesity occurs the body stores an excess amount of fat, and is more than what the person needs to survive. Some scientists have argued that males are considered obese when they are 25 percent over their ideal body weight, meanwhile, females are thirty percent. Regardless of these scientific calculations, the storage of excess fat is caused by many factors that leads to many health complications. Many variables cause obesity. There is not one factor that could have been linked to the cause of this serious health issue alone. Factors can be genetic or nongenetic. If obesity is genetic, then it cannot be controlled, but on the flip side, if it can be controlled, then obesity was influenced by the environment the child resides in. Children can inherit genes that leads to obesity and eventually, diabetes. Some mutated genes have been discovered that contributes to obesity; however, none of the mutated genes can cause the health issue alone (PMC).
